If you've ever played an electronic Role-Playing Game or a First Person Shooter you're likely to be familiar with the concept of "boss fights." For those of you who have not had the pleasure, a boss fight is an encounter in one of these type of games that is significantly more difficult than the encounters leading up to it. Boss fights can occasionally take a considerable amount of time. I've personally seen fights go 30 minutes or more in games like World of Warcraft, and one of the most infamous boss fights in MMORPG history happened in the game Final Fantasy Xi (the players involved gave up after 18 hours and they did not take down the bad guy).
Many of you will spend time this weekend playing these type of games and you may encounter some bosses in the process of doing so. How long will you take trying to beat them? 5 minutes? 10? 20?
Can you exercise for that long?
In attempting to achieve a balance between gaming and fitness it's important to step back and assess whether or not you are spending so much time on one that the other is being neglected. More often than not the scales are going to tip towards the activity that is less physically demanding.
This weekend we want you to see whether or not your physical health is on par with your gaming stamina. We want you to have three "boss fights" over the course of the next three days. During these boss fights you are to exercise as hard as you can for five minutes without stopping. We're not talking about light walking here or anything like that. We really want you to push yourself and get your heart racing (without hurting yourself, of course). The goal here is to see if you can work as hard as you can play.
If you succeed you may just take one more step towards shedding some of your Phat Lewtz.

Sorry I've been incommunicado this week. Work's kept me busy. And for what it matters, dairy is definitely my red light food.
Okay, so, since I tweaked my knee this past weekend, any recommendations for exercises to push myself with for five minutes? The only thing I can think of is doing crunches, mainly because I can't do push-ups for one minute straight, much less five minutes.
And for the love of god, stretch and warm up before you do this. Don't make an idiot out of yourself by skipping those things and sidelining yourself for a week or two.

If you'd like to do it while lifting weights I'd suggest a complex shoulder routine. Get a moderate to heavy weight (I use anywhere from 10 to 15 pounds) and do one each of the following:
- Lateral Raise
- Forward Raise
- Upright Row
- Bicep Curl
Repeat and keep doing that for five minutes straight. It may not sound like much on the surface, but it will REALLY get your heart racing.

This reminds me that I still need to lay my hands on a discarded truck tire, since I have a sledgehammer with which to beat the ever-living shit out of it already.

That looks similar to an evil one that Rafe gave me one day for shoulders. He said to use a 10# — I used a 15#. I was sorry.
Do 10-15 reps of each exercise, and, without rest, move to the next exercise.
- Lateral Raise
- Front Raise
- Shoulder Press
- Bent over, reverse flyes
Twas pure evil — I promise you. Squeezing out 3 sets is a beast. (I did rest between sets)

When looking up the proper form for those exercises, I came across the following site.
http://www.exrx.net
Not only does it give a good description of most of the exercises I looked at, it also has gifs to show proper form during the exercise. It is made of win.

Well, beat two of the three bosses. Sunday, I was going to work out post football game, and well, that game ripped my heart out. So, yeah, two of three.

Why? Are you a truck tire?

This is an excellent site; it's also home to one of my bookmarked pages – http://www.exrx.net/Testing/We…..dards.html
If anyone was curious where I pull some of those crazy lifting goals from, your answer is: The "Advanced" column.
