May you enjoy the companionship of your party members, the sublime joy of vanquishing your foes, the benevolence of the Random Number Generator, and every buff you receive.

From all of us here at ShrinkGeek Orbital Headquarters, to all of you, we wish you a healthy and joyful holiday season.

Here in the States, today is a day to reflect and give thanks for all the wonderful things going on in one’s life. Thus, we wanted to take a moment and let you know how thankful the team here at ShrinkGeek are that all of you come by and read our assorted ramblings every day. To say we’re blown away by the warm response we’ve gotten in the just over six months since we started this crazy project would be a fairly epic understatement. From comments to emailed notes and all manner of other things, we’ve heard one thing from many people since we initially started this blog up: more!

To that end, we’ve got some great things in the works, and we’re trying to figure out new and interesting ways we can bring geek fitness into the new year.  Suggestions we’ve heard from readers thus far range from sharing more tips and tricks to adding a weekly podcast so people can enjoy some ShrinkGeek goodness while working out. However, if we haven’t heard from you, we’d be especially thankful if you’d consider adding your ideas to the mix. It’s easy to do: drop them to us at ask [at] shrinkgeek [dot] com or toss them into the comment box below. Every bit of feedback we get helps tremendously.

Ultimately, ShrinkGeek is all about taking this journey together. For that, we are thankful for all of you who have chosen to take it along with us. We’ll be here to help keep you on-track and focused on your goals until the only fat any of us have to worry about is accruing [fat loots] in our geeky pastime of choice.

Several of the ShrinkGeek crew are hitting the road for Dragon*Con at oh-dark-thirty Thursday morning, and will be wandering happily among the throngs of our fellow geeks there. A couple of us will be volunteering and/or speaking on the MMORPG Track, which makes us even easier to find, if you’re so inclined. What this means is that things are apt to be a little quiet here while we’re having fanboy/fangirl moments over various SF and gaming personages, punting gnomes, and catching up with friends from all over the ‘tubes.

We promise not to be stinky, and will probably talk your ear off about Cataclysm or our progress or whatever else comes to mind, depending how many energy drinks or protein shakes we’ve had at that point.

And, if we can’t get out of the habit of waking up early, you might even find us at the fitness center being suspiciously healthy… or at least trying to work off the excesses of the previous evening’s shenanigans.

We still love you, but we love William Shatner’s shaman more.

Ding Grats

We all face challenges to our weight loss efforts and obstacles to our abilities to lead healthy lifestyles. So each week The Geeks gather to consider progress towards goals. It keeps us honest with ourselves and those reading to see exactly where we stand.

This is not limited to just the staff here at ShrinkGeek. We want to hear success stories from our readers too. So if you’re inspired by us, think we’re crazy, or just want to publicly state that you’ve made accomplishments too, send an e-mail with your story to ding at shrinkgeek dot com.

I would say I began my journey into geekdom perhaps around the early 80′s when I first got my hands on an Atari 2600. Later things progressed to an Apple IIc, Apple IIgs, NES, Sega Master System, and Genesis. During this time I also began my journey into being somewhat of a yo-yo when it came to my weight, which at times I would blame Walgreens for opening up a mere 1/3 mile from my house, with 3 for $1 candy.

Getting into skateboarding and Tae Kwon Do helped me get back into shape and I soon became a bit of a drama geek in high school. Although there were many a rehearsal day that included large amounts of fast food, I preferred to save my lunch money in favor of buying CDs, which I had to walk almost 4 miles for. So my weight held up pretty well despite trading in the skateboard and dojo for the stage.

Although I gained a bit of weight after high school, it hadn’t been a real issue for years. I always stayed within a few pounds of my BMI despite letting in some less than healthy foods. That was until 1996 when the geekdom returned in the form of a job in Information Technology which earned me enough money to buy a computer of my own for at home. Sitting in front of a computer all day and partaking in more cafeteria/vending foods didn’t do my body good. That situation, along with a cross country move to California and back and partaking in many new foods and lifestyle changes along the way, caused my weight over the years to climb up until I was about 55lbs over weight.
