Bob knows slack.

Left to my own devices, I tend towards entropy with rather phenomenal speed, even when not being given a firm shove in the back by the none-too-subtle hand of Fate (or Fate’s foot, which is typically applied just a bit lower). One of the components of a well-balanced fitness regimen is the occasional recovery break — a week where, for all intents and purposes, you slack off. Last week hadn’t originally been on my agenda as Slack Week, but, you know, you don’t always expect the Spanish Inquisition, either.

In much the same way that a good night’s sleep allows you to recover and recharge, the occasional vacation from the gym altogether lets your body restore itself a little more deeply. We’ve all taken time away from some game or other, no matter how much we enjoy it — whether it’s due to travel, hardware failure, or the shambling dead blocking the way to your tabletop site — and coming back, we feel refreshed, invigorated, and renewed.

To paraphrase Gordon Gekko, “Slack, for lack of a better word, is good.”

Now that my slack has been slacked … or maybe slaked… (Sluck?  Slackened? Sloke?), there is something new on the horizon, at least as the basis for my next routine.  On the recommendation of a friend, I’m enjoying the hell out of Starting Strength: Basic Barbell Training (2nd Edition).

Expect a review soonish, of both the book, and the stuff it suggests.

  1. I’m glad you’re enjoying Starting Strength so much; I thought you would. :)

  2. There’s a lot to be said for clear, straightforward, no-nonsense instructions on the basics.

And it is one of the few books that’s ever made me actually laugh out loud while reading; at the caption illustrating why you should not look up while doing a squat — “Don’t do this, you fool.”
