Velocity Diet 3.0 by T-Nation.com

Two weeks in, and our hero is still more or less behaving himself.  Actually, that both over- and under-states the situation.

Nutritionally, it’s still all shakes, all the time, and the handful of capsules to round things out.  My substitution for the milled flaxseed (for fiber and some healthy fats) is psyllium husk capsules (AM & PM) and a slice or two of pepper jack or chipotle cheddar cheese in the evening, the latter of which handily addresses my lingering need for spicy food. There was some additional non-compliance, in the form of Chinese takeout and some very nice Chardonnay, which was somewhat offset by the fact that, due to my participation in some truly exceptional naps over the weekend, I kind of forgot to eat almost entirely.

Uh, yeah. Charles Barkley isn’t the only person who self-identifies as  not a role model.

Sticking to It

Not perfect, but better than last week. There was the aforementioned Chinese takeout (I admit it, I am a fiend for wanton soup, and won’t say a very vigorous “no” to sesame chicken), which is arguably less-bad than the Hawaiian pizza of which I had, err, half of during week 1. I suppose it’s a testament to the robustness of the program that, despite this sort of culinary indiscretion, my results are still quite positive.

On the gym front, I’m still trying to acclimate myself to the “fewer, more intense workouts” methodology. On off days, I engaged in a fair bit of stretching, and had every intention of playing a bit of flag football and short-field soccer after work mid-week, but those ended up falling through. It’s probably just as well, really — June afternoons in Florida can accurately summed up by the phrase “oppressively hot.” In more positive developments, however, was my finally getting around to acquiring a real weight bench for my place. Now, learning how to do the various lifts with proper form is a priority, both in terms of injury prevention and getting the most out of them. This is where having a buddy who is a certified personal trainer comes in handy, since I’m one of those “learn by doing” types, though I grok the basics from reading tutorials and watching video snippets.

Progress

The weekly benchmark, the V-Burn Challenge, will continue to be done on Tuesdays for the sake of consistency, so those results will be posted the following Monday.  To that end, the first iteration was done in 21:00.  Since one data point in a vacuum is pretty much useless all by itself, allow me to slap some perspective onto that number. This represents a pretty good baseline improvement from when I first did the program in March (25 minutes and change), but also a bit of backsliding since I finished it (a hair under 17).  I was definitely feeling Monday’s workout in my legs (all those heavy squats made the jumps and squat-thrusts suck).  In any case, that’s the time to beat going forward.

The scale also had some good news this morning — three pounds and change have left the building.

Apparently, this particular form of insanity is contagious, as at least one friend has indicated that they’re doing VD3 after reading about these shenanigans.  If anyone else is engaging in a highly-structured regimen — VD3, P90/P90X, what have you — feel free to share your experiences (and hopefully success stories!) with the huddled, teeming, geeky masses.

  1. As maybe “the”aforementions Sucker(friend) who has decided to head down this path as well I should say somehting.

    1. Because this is my first time doing this diet and to because well its only fair to respond in like.

Week One is complete I can honestly say I didnt slip once but that was the hardest thing I think I have done in a long time. It took me a bit to get use to the All shake all the time thing but with the help of some additives like instant coffee and sugar free torini I have made that much more enjoyable.

Now if only someone would come up with a bacon flavored shake I would be set. The sweetness of every single meal is getting sooo old.

The Healthy solid meal was good but I made way more than I could eat its amazing how much the stomach shrinks in one week. Now I am off to plan next weeks solid meal. :)

    • I’ve seen Bacon Diet Coke floating around the internet before. Who knows maybe Bacon flavored shakes will be here soon.

  2. Yeah, that was you, but there may be others out there, lurking in the digital shadows, or something.

Rock on with your better-than-me compliance. :-)
