Hippocrates at the AsclepionIt seems that several of the geeks here have been stricken with some form of malady recently. Therefore, this week’s Ding Grats is in honor of Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine… with the hope that his disciples will not have to see us in their offices again for quite some time.

Ding Grats is a weekly update on progress towards goals. We share a bit about our own struggles and triumphs to keep us honest and on track. But this is not limited to just the staff here at ShrinkGeek. We want to know what accomplishments you’ve achieved in your health efforts and what challenges you made need a raid party to tackle. So if you’re inspired by us, think we’re crazy, or just want to publicly state where you stand with your own fitness goals, send an e-mail with your story to ding at shrinkgeek dot com.

Heather: I’m afraid I’m out of commission this week. Dealing with a terrible abscess at the moment and have an emergency oral surgery scheduled for Wednesday. Expecting to be relatively back to normal by the weekend but until then, my agenda is mainly comprised of painkillers and plenty of rest.

Krystalle: While I did a surprising amount of healthy eating at E3, I didn’t get nearly as much water in as I should have. Between that and going from 2 miles a day walking to doing nothing but walking all day, my body had a small freak out about the dramatic spike in my activity level, and I actually wound up gaining weight this week. Now, I’m about to add wrist surgery into the mix, which may well put me down for several days – or a half day. Having never had surgery in my life before, who knows?

Just have to not get down about putting weight on despite being insanely active and eating fairly well during an incredibly stressful show.

Lexy: As mentioned in the last Ding Grats, I was in a wedding a few weeks ago. The pictures are back from the photographer and I have to admit – there’s nothing quite like photographic evidence to make me cringe at my current form. That’s just one more kick in the pants for me to keep on track.

Of course, mass quantities of stress and work (which, for me, means sitting in front of a computer and programming all day and night) have not helped the matter.  I am a stress eater. And that, coupled with the fact that my husband found a slightly-better-in-terms-of-fat-content Haagen-Dazs, has made even my best intentions slip over the past several days a bit. It hasn’t shown its ugly face on the scale yet… but it’s just a matter of time. There’s really no point in dwelling now. The ice cream is gone and the stress is still there (minor caveat to my stress eating – it doesn’t actually help the stress /shrug). The best I can do now is counter by eating healthier going forward and attempting to escape the computer chair once in a while to get outside.

Michael: I was down 1.6 pounds at my weekly weigh-in last week and on track to my goal of 240 by mid-August.  My Weight Watchers Momentum Walk-It Challenge 5k practice group added a mile on to our walks this week and I have increased the incline on the treadmill at work to 3% and am using it without holding on to the support bars.  I’ve decided to restart the 100 Push Up Challenge with full push ups instead of the “half” push ups I was doing previously, and after my latest exhaustion test I’m up to week 6 column 3 in the 200 sit-up challenge.  I’ve completed the first 10 days of the 30 Day Challenge from EA Sports Active, and I also got in a little time with Dance Dance Revolution and Wii Sports to round out my exergaming weekend.

Rafe: I’m down about four pounds and 2% bodyfat (to 157 and 11.3%, respectively).

It honestly feels weird to be working out so much -less-, but that’s what the VD3 calls for, and I’m trying to behave myself.

Scott: So far so good. Diet has been…not easy to be on but easier than previous attempts.

At my lowest last week I was down 4.2lbs. Last I checked I was still down a solid 3 after 6 days. Was at my girlfriend’s place so I didn’t have access to my scale, and won’t until Wednesday morning, but things are going smoothly.

Gym activity progressing well too. Mixing up the cardio more, not over doing it, and am being as consistent as I can.

  1. Wednesday Morning Update:

Got access to my scale again. Was sick Monday night and still coming down with something so I haven’t been as strict on the diet the past day and a half. And I had a lot of sodium (“quick meals” like soup and a microwave meal) so I may be retaining water a bit. But as of this morning I was still down a solid 3lbs.
